Memphis Slim | 1940-2012

Un sorprendente artista, muy prolífico, que dio un aire de sofisticación urbana al blues en cada uno de sus temas. John “Peter” Chatman, más conocido como Memphis Slim, está catalogado como uno de los mejores pianistas de toda la historia del blues. Fue muy inteligente al tomar al pie de la letra el consejo de Big Bill Broonzy, en el sentido de desarrollar un estilo que viniera de lo que dijera su corazón y no de la imitación de su ídolo, Roosevelt Sykes. Muy pronto, otros estaban copiando a Slim. Su ataque a los teclados de marfil lo pusieron en un sitio aparte de sus contemporáneos, a la vez que su profunda voz comenzaba a mostrar su autoridad.
John “Peter” Chatman nació y creció en Memphis, una ciudad para intentar una carrera como bluesman. En algún momento de los años 30, se ubicó en Chicago y comenzó a grabar como líder de banda para el sello Okeh, en 1939. Al año siguiente pasó a Bluebird. Por esa misma época, Slim unió fuerzas con Broonzy, quien era la fuerza dominante en la escena blues local. Después de ser el invaluable compañero de Broonzy, Slim emergió en 1944 con su propia reputación.
Luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Slim se unió a Hy-Tone Records, grabando 8 temas que fueron tomados posteriormente por el sello King.En 1947, el sello Miracle relanzó al pianista con una banda de apoyo llamada The House Rockers y grabó éxitos como “Lend me your love”, “Rockin’ the house” y “Nobody loves me”, que con el tiempo fue conocida como “Everyday I have the blues”, gracias a las versiones de Lowell Fulson, Joe Williams y B.B. King.
Memphis Slim se paseó por muchos sellos luego de Miracle, hasta que en 1952 se estableció con United Records. Dos años con esta casa disquera fueron un periodo prolífico para el pianista, quien había reclutado a Matt Murphy como su guitarrista, dándole mucha seriedad a temas como “Sassy Mae” o “Memphis Slim USA”.
Antes de finalizar la década del 50, Memphis Slim pasó a Vee-jay Records, donde grabó versiones definitivas de sus temas más conocidos con Murphy y un combo de estrellas como soporte.
Slim exhibió su independencia al abandonar Estados Unidos en 1962. Una gira por Europa, con el bajista Willie Dixon, un par de años antes había dejado intrigado al pianista acerca de mudarse a París, donde las posibilidades de grabación y dar conciertos parecían ilimitadas y también, porque el veterano pianista había sido tratado con un respeto que en ocasiones le había sido negado en su país. Permaneció en la capital francesa hasta su muerte en 1988, aumentando así el estatus de la realeza blues expatriada.
