La historia de Chess Records

No hay dudas que Chess fue el sello que le dio un giro trascendental al blues y que elevó los hermanos Leonard y Phil a categoría de mito, ya que se transformarían en protagonistas de una revolución musical liderada por afroamericanos, quienes por su parte, asumían la hegemonía como verdaderos reyes y dueños de un estilo que les pertenece a cabalidad. ¿Pero quiénes grabaron allí?, ¿Cómo partió el sello?.
Leonard y Phil Chess, eran dos inmigrantes polacos que llegan a América y se establecen en el Chicago de Post guerra. Estuvieron en el lugar y tiempo indicado ya que coincidieron con el nacimiento de una generación que tenía hambre de fama. Para eso estaban; un éxito bajo el brazo y el incipiente movimiento blusero de la ciudad del viento, poco a poco se transformaría en todo un sub género musical, uno de los más importantes de la historia del blues.
Chess fue el sucesor de Aristocrat, un sello pequeño e independiente formado en 1947 por el matrimonio compuesto por Evelyn y Charles Aron. Sus primeros registros fueron la banda blanca dirigida por Sherman Haynes que pronto llamaría la atención de Leonard. En el 47 él se convierte en vendedor de los títulos de Aristocrat, trabajando con el primer disco de Tibbs, llamado “Bilbo is Dead Man Blues”, luego asumiría mayores responsabilidades después de la separación de sus dueños.
Recomendado por el pianista Sunnyland Slim, llega a las oficinas de Leonard Chess, Muddy Waters. Inmediatamente se encerraría en el estudio y grabaría la popular “I Can’t Be Satisfed”. Cuando este tema se liberaba, muy pronto se convirtió en un éxito, desde ahí que Leonard se dio cuenta que existía mercado para este tipo de música. A finales de 1949, él compra los derechos de propiedad a Evelyn con la idea de seguir grabando a Waters y así fue, durante los próximos meses el hombre de la telecaster registró “Rollin Stone”, pero algo faltaba en su sonido para hacerlo aun más diferente que el resto de sus colegas; es así como entra Little Walter con la idea de remoldear el sonido del Chicago Blues y convertirlo en el antecedente directo de una banda de rock.
Aristocrat había dejado de ser el sello pequeño de antes y para eso Leonard decide ampliarse a una oficina más grande, donde oficialmente se une a la empresa su hermano Phil a principios de 1950. Los hermanos cierran el club Macomba, de su propiedad y que fue afectado por un incendio, mientras tanto, un amigo de ambos, Buster Williams, les sugiere cambiar el nombre al sello a Chess Records.
Durante la década del 50 los hermanos Chess manejaron la mayoría de las producciones, las cuales incluyen a Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf y también la subsidiaria Checker records, un ala menor del sello que tenía como figura indiscutible a Little Walter, quien grabó el famoso “Juke”, álbum que lo posicionó por semanas en el tope de las tablas. En 1960 traen al productor Ralph Bass con la idea de manejar a todos los cantantes góspel y algunos de blues que giraban por Chicago. Antes de eso Willie Dixon ya había hecho carrera escribiendo los clásicos del blues por antonomasia y descubriendo a otros más.
Leonard murió inesperadamente en 1969 y en 1970 la compañía cambiaba de manos una vez más y Muddy Waters con Willie Dixon demandan al sello por el pago de regalías. Desde el 1425 de South Karlov a la mítica dirección de 2120 South Michigan Avenue, pasaron artistas como Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Etta James, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Koko Taylor, Lowell Fulson y un eterno etcétera, que ayudaron a construir el sonido que hoy conocemos como Chicago blues y que en esta década fue revivido de manera muy romántica por Hollywood a través Cadillac Records, el filme basado en la historia del nacimiento, apogeo y fin del sello que revolucionó la historia de la música popular y parte de la base estructural de lo que hoy conocemos por rock.(Por Claudio Ibarra)

Cadillac Records es una película estadounidense dirigida por Darnell Martin en el año 2008. Cuenta la historia de la compañía discográfica norteamericana Chess Records.
Argumento: Chicago, 1947. Leonard Chess se lanza al negocio discográfico tras quedar fascinado por la música de Muddy Waters y Little Walter, el conjunto de blues que ameniza su bar. Su fulgurante éxito hace aumentar la nómina de músicos de Leonard, formando el sello de grabación más importante de la cultura musical afroamericana de esa época. El orgullo, los líos de faldas y la ambición cruzan los destinos de todos ellos, pero el mayor revuelo llegará con la aparición en escena de dos pioneros en el género: Chuck Berry y Etta James.
