The Blues Band [3 CD]

En 1969, dos ex-miembros de Manfred Mann y de los Bluesbreakers de John Mayall se unen y, con sus propios nombres, forman el grupo McGuinness Flint. Son Tom McGuinness como guitarra y Hunghie Flint como batería. Completan la banda con Dennis Coulson (voz solista), Graham Lyle y Benny Gallagher; estos dos multi-instrumentistas escoceses, serán los autores de los éxitos del grupo.
El quinteto graba dos soberbios LP’s, McGuinness Flint y Happy birthday Ruthie baby, alcanzan el top-5 inglés con When l’m dead and gone (n.º 2) y Malt and barley blues (n.º 5). En 1971, Gallagher y Lyle dejan el grupo para formar un dúo. Dixie Dean (bajo) se une a McGuinness, Flint y Coulson, y los cuatro graban el LP Lo and behold, que es un fracaso.
En 1973, Coulson se va y graba el álbum Dennis Coulson, y le sustituyen dos miembros, Lou Stonebridge (voz y guitarra) y Jim Evans (guitarra). Tras dos pobres LP’s, Rainbow y C’est la vie, se separan definitivamente, editándose el recopilatorio Greatest hits. Tras años de oscuridad, McGuinness y Flint reaparecen en 1980, con el ex-cantante de Manfred Mann, Paul Jones, el guitarra Dave Kelly y el bajista Gary Fletcher, formando The Blues Band, un excelente grupo de rock, con gotas de la primitiva comercialidad Mann y una personalidad adaptada a los 80.
Tras el brillante álbum The official Blues Band bootleg album, se afianzarán con Ready, Itchy feet y Brand Loyalty. En este año de 1982 Flint dejará al grupo y es reemplazado por el batería Rob Townsend. Seguidamente graban el álbum Bye bye blues y posteriormente, después de algunas separaciones temporales, el grupo reformado ha seguido trabajando y editando nuevos discos. De sus últimos lanzamientos se pueden mencionar los álbumes, The best of The Blues Band (2005) y Few short lines (2011).

Este disco (Homage del 93) se registró como un homenaje a los artistas favoritos de la banda. Cada uno de sus miembros eligió algunos temas interpretándolos a su manera. England's the Blues Band is led by ex-Manfred Mann vocalist Paul Jones and guitarist/vocalist Dave Kelly, who, before forming the group in 1979, had been a member of the John Dummer Blues Band and issued several solo recordings on his own (Kelly had also received praise for his playing by such blues legends as Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker). After hooking up with friend/bassist Gary Fletcher, the seeds for the Blues Band were sown, resulting in countless albums (including such titles as 1980's Official Bootleg Album and Ready, 1981's Itchy Feet, 1982's Brand Loyalty which featured new member ex-Family drummer Rob Townsend, 1983's Bye Bye Blues, 1986's These Kind of Blues, 1989's Back for More, 1991's Fat City, 1993's Homage, and 1995's Wire Less, among others). In addition, Kelly formed the Dave Kelly Band in the mid-'80s (issuing four albums), penned music for commercials and such projects as BBC TV's King of the Ghetto and The Comic Strip Presents Strike!, has been voted Best Acoustic Artist by BBC polls throughout the '90s, and is an honorary patron of the London Guitar College with Hank Marvin.

Paul Jones hace una interpretación impresionante de Georgia On My Mind, Dave Kelly lleva la voz principal en temas como the smooth Leave My Woman añadiendo algo de guitarra slide. El siempre brillante con su guitarra Tom McGuinness junto con una sección rítmica de primera clase (Gary Fletcher en el bajo y Rob Townsend a la batería que reemplaza a Hughie Flint a partir de 1982), sin dejar de mencionar la armónica de Paul Jones, hacen de estos 41 "temazos" un disco muy conveniente de escuchar para quienes aún no conocen bien a esta grandiosa banda.
